    Click It or Ticket 2010 — Saving Teen Lives

    What You Need to Know Now

    From May 24 to June 6, 2010, the New York State Police will join with police officers nationwide in support of the annual Click It or Ticket seat belt enforcement mobilization. During Click It or Ticket police will be stepping up belt enforcement activities both day and night.

    If you or your teen is caught not wearing a seat belt during the mobilization, you can expect a ticket, not a warning. However, Click It or Ticket is not about writing tickets. It’s about saving lives by getting more people, especially teen drivers and passengers, to buckle up regularly.

    Buckling up is the single most effective thing you can do to protect yourself in the event of a crash. Tragically, teens are among those least likely to wear their seat belts. They are also among those most likely to die in motor vehicle crashes. In fact, motor vehicle crashes are the #1 killer of teens today.

    How You Can Help

    As Click It or Ticket approaches, you have an ideal opportunity to talk with your teen about why it’s so important to wear seat belts every trip and every time. Make sure you and your teen know that seat belts:

    • Reduce the risk of fatal injury to front-seat passenger car occupants by 45 percent — and by 60 percent in pickup trucks, SUVs, and minivans;
    • Increase the odds of survival in a rollover crash in a light truck by nearly 80 percent;
    • Save lives — 13,250 lives in 2008 alone and over 75,000 lives during the five-year period from 2004 through 2008

    By modeling safe driving behavior, always buckling up and insisting your teen driver and passengers do the same — you can help protect yourself and your family from dying in a motor vehicle crash.
